Guilty of fraud: Poducers of “Ragtime” and “Kiss of Spider Woman”

Livent Producers Drabinsky and Gottlieb Are Guilty of Fraud, Canadian Courts Say

Garth Drabinsky of Livent Productions

Garth Drabinsky and Myron Gottlieb, the producers who gave North American theatre a shot in the arm with award-winning productions of Show Boat, Ragtime, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Fosse and more, were found guilty of fraud and forgery carried out at their production company Livent, Inc., a Canadian court ruled March 25.

Ontario Superior Court Justice Mary Lou Benotto made her judgment in Toronto, 11 months after the trial began.  The judge asserted that the producing duo’s “creative success” was “spectacular” but that “widespread and long-standing” fraud and “deliberate misrepresentation” clouded their success and theatrical contributions.

There’s a Chicago connection to Drabinsky and Livent: the company refurbished Chicago’s ornate Oriental Theatre, where they produced a successful run of their Tony Award winning musical Ragtime.  (personal note: Ragtime is easily one of my top 3 musicals, along with Parade and Sweeney Todd)

"Addams Family – The Musical" – Nathan Lane, Bebe Neuwirth participate in first public reading

UPDATE: Read our review3 stars!!    review

bebeneuwirth nathanlane

Wow – Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have this same list of Broadway stars headline the pre-Broadway Chicago production?  And doesn’t Bebe Neuwirth seem like the perfect Morticia Addams?

=========================================

Excerpts from the Playbill-Online article:

The cast of this developmental workshop includes Nathan Lane as Gomez, Bebe Neuwirth as Morticia, Kevin Chamberlin as Fester, Zachary James as Lurch, Mary Louise Burke as Grandmama, Terrence Mann, Jan Maxwell and more. As is often the case with readings and workshops, this does not necessarily reflect what the final production casting will be.

As previously announced, the musical will make its world premiere Nov. 13, 2009-Jan. 10, 2010, at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre in Chicago, prior to a spring 2010 launch on Broadway.

With a book by Marshall Brickman and partner Rick Elice (librettists of the 2006 Tony Award-winning Best Musical, Jersey Boys) and music and lyrics by Drama Desk Award-winning composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party), the musical is wholly original and not based on Addams Family material from other media.

Produced by Elephant Eye Theatrical and Roy Furman, The Addams Family has direction and design by Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, the creators of Shockheaded Peter.

The Addams Family creative team also includes choreographer Sergio Trujillo, lighting designer Natasha Katz and musical director Mary-Mitchell Campbell.

UPDATE: Addams Family opens in Chicago!!!

“Wicked” – Final weekend!!

DefyingGravity

It’s hard to believe, but after nearly 4 years, Wicked is finally closing (making it the longest-running Broadway-touring play in Chicago’s history).  I have to admit that I saw it 3 times (once during previews, once with a visiting friend, and once more with my niece), and I enjoyed it each time – mostly because it’s such a delightfully clever story.

Anyway…

Farmhouse Only this weekend remain for Chicagoans to see WICKED, the musical phenomenon that has changed Chicago “for good”.  The WICKED drawing will continue to take place for all performances. WICKED will take its final bow in Chicago on January 25, 2009.

WICKED has helped Broadway In Chicago stand as the fifth most popular tourist attraction in the City of Chicago and has spurred interest in theatre both locally and nationally.  When surveyed, over 70 percent of the WICKED theatre patrons said that they had plans to see another show in Chicago within the year.

GlindaGoodWitch Called “Broadway’s biggest blockbuster” by The New York Times and “a cultural phenomenon” by Variety, WICKED continues to cast a spell on all of Chicagoland and its many visitors – over 2.9 million people have attended WICKED in Chicago with audience members representing all 50 U.S. states and all seven continents. WICKED is now the longest running Broadway musical in Chicago ’s theater history. The Chicago company of WICKED took the stage on June 24, 2005 at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre.

WickedWitch WICKED is produced by Marc Platt , Universal Pictures, The Araca Group, Jon B. Platt and David Stone . Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, WICKED has music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman. Directed by Joe Mantello, with musical staging by Wayne Cilento, WICKED is currently presented in Chicago; a US National Tour; on Broadway at the Gershwin Theatre; in Stuttgart, Germany; Melbourne, Australia; Tokyo, Japan; and in London at the Apollo Victoria Theatre. WICKED will be opening in San Francisco on January 27, 2009 at the Orpheum Theatre.

WICKED is now playing through January 25, 2009 at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre ( 24 W. Randolph St .).

Cousin Itt coming to Broadway in Chicago!

A family shot of the popular 60's sitcom, "The Addams Family"Yep, you read right.  The creepy yet lovable Addams family is getting a musical of their own, courtesy of Broadway in Chicago.  Making its world premier here in Chicago at the Oriental Theatre (aka Ford Center for the Performing Arts), The Addams Family – A New Musical will begin its pre-Broadway run in November 2009.

Like many other Gen X-ers, I grew up watching “The Addams Family” after school, my favorite characters being mother Morticia and the oh-so-hairy gibberish-speaking Cousin Itt. (and, yes, being an avid crossword enthusiast, “Itt” is spelled with 2 t’s!).

Judging from the creative team, this show has a lot of promise: composer/lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Wild Party), choreographer Sergio Trujillo (The Jersey Boys), and Olivier Award-winning director/designers Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch (Shockheaded Peter).

By the way, does anyone know what these original Addams Family actors are up to now?
